Things we don't get back in Australia

I found this in my hotel bathroom:

It features a heated seat, and various kinds of spraying facilities, including some kind of oscillating option. I haven't tried them to be honest. Right now I'm content enough to giggle at the pictures.

I have also been into a few public toilets while walking around Nagasaki today, and I don't mind saying they are a darn sight nicer than your average public loo in Australia. Not all public loos come with sprays, but they do all come with a speaker, that says something (in Japanese) to you the moment you sit down, followed by a recording of a toilet flushing sound. This is not an optional extra. It seems that even if you are not embarrassed enough by the tinkling sounds made in a toilet, nobody else wants to hear you do it.

Changing the subject for a moment, look what I got out of the vending machine this morning:

It's a can by the way. But it has a screw top lid. All the advantages of a can, with the convenience of being able to save some for later (although the can couldn't have been bigger than 200 ml)

Also, later in the day I got this, totally sucked in by its clever slogan:

I must say, I do like the vending machine culture around here. You can get coke, water, beer, cigarettes, iced-tea, iced-coffee, fermented bean juice, underwear, whatever you want. About every 50 metres. Actually, I didn't see an underwear vending machine in Nagasaki, but I've heard about them in Tokyo.

BXVI getting down with the times

"Young friend, God and his people expect much from u because u have within you the Fathers supreme gift: the Spirit of Jesus - BXVI."

Text message sent by Pope Benedict XVI to subscribing pilgrims on World Youth Day, July 15 2008. Reported in The Age.

Look I have no problem with technology being used in this way. But seriously, couldn't he have written "you" instead of "u". I'm not personally filled with "the Father's supreme gift" (at least, not knowingly), but I really think it detracts from the sentiment by writing it in txtspk.

Update, July 16th:
"The Holy Spirit gave the Apostles and gives u the power boldly 2 proclaim that Christ is risen! - BXVI."

Same deal. Look, if P.Ben* is going to go to all of the trouble to capitalise his Holy Spirits, Apostles, and Christ's, would it really be that much more trouble to write 'you' and 'to'? I'm just saying.

*He's in no position to complain about abbreviations under the circumstances!

It's part of an experiment

truth

At the time of posting this (April 25 2008), the search term "truth" ranked this truth experiment #3 on google.ca (The experiment is based in Canada), #9 on google.com, and #21 on google.com.au

I'll check back in a few days to see if anything changed.

Update April 30th 2008: The truth experiment still ranks at #3 on google.ca, but has moved up to #7 on google.com, and #16 on google.com.au. Huh.

The most ridiculous probably non-spam email I've ever received

I received an email yesterday in my old UBC account that I don't really use anymore. The email came from a guy named Kallum at a University of Guelph email address. Here's what the email said:

Good Day Ms. Kidd,

I've been trying to find a research article for a friend but have so far been unsuccessful at my university and others. Access to the journal Nature Clinical Practice Urology seems to be very elusive, but the UBC library appears to have it. I was wondering if you've some spare time and are willing, if you could please download the pdf file of the article and email to me.

Library link: http://gw2jh3xr2c.search.serialssolutions.com/?V=1.0&L=GW2JH3XR2 C&S=AC_T_B&C=Nature+Clinical+Practice+Urology

Journal Name: Nature Clinical Practice Urology
Volume: 2
Issue: 1
First Page: 38

Thank you for your time and have a Great Day.
Kallum

This was followed 5 minutes later by another email from the same guy:

Hello again Ms. Kidd,

Forgot to put the year of that article on which is 2005.

cheers
Kallum

Now, I am perhaps a little on the gullible side on occasions, and have a tendency to believe things that my friends tell me - failing to understand why they would intentionally tell me a lie (but that's another story). However, I also consider myself reasonably savvy when it comes to recognizing an email scam (after some coaching from Bryan and other geek friends). For example when I received an email this morning from TD Canada Trust asking me to click on a link and verify my banking details, I gave it no more thought as I sent it to the trash. And I almost never reply to Nigerian bank managers requesting permission to store millions of dollars in my bank account.

But for some reason the email from Kallum seemed vaguely legit - perhaps it was the follow up email that made me think it was above board (because email scams would never involve a follow up email, right?). Or maybe it was the fact that he talked about universities and journal articles (academics are never involved in email scams, right?). So then with little further thought, I STUPIDLY clicked on the link on the first email, just to see what kind of article he was trying to get hold of. Not 10 nanoseconds after I clicked the link I regretted it and tried to close down my browser before it could open the link. Luckily I was saved by my browser requiring a password (I was at work), so I hit cancel and the link couldn't open.

I talked about it with Bryan last night and we both agreed that it was highly suspicious email and I should never click on links in highly suspicious emails. But I couldn't help thinking that it wasn't a scam, but just a really stupid email from a really stupid person. So this morning I forwarded the emails to Bryan to see what he thought of them. At the same time I googled some keywords from the link, the journal name, Kallum's full name, email address etc. It didn't turn up anything that indicated it was a scam. In fact it appeared Kallum was a grad student from Lakehead University (never heard of it!), despite using a UGuelph email address. It all looked pretty legit, and Bryan agreed that it did appear to be legit, but seriously misguided.

It's not uncommon for me to receive an email from someone looking for a copy of an article that I have written, but this article has absolutely nothing to do with me, and isn't even in my research area. I don't understand how or why he would randomly email someone at a UBC email address to ask them to send him an article from the UBC library. And why did he have to randomly email someone on behalf of a friend? Maybe his friend thought that randomly emailing people was a dumb idea, in which case Kallum should have listened. Hasn't he ever heard of interlibrary loans or document delivery? And how could he assume that I was "Ms. Kidd" rather than Dr. Kidd? I could have been the V-P for all he knew! (Although I admit I am sensitive about that, having had a major Vancouver news station discuss my research and refer to me only as "Sarah"). Why did Kallum think that a total stranger would feel like clicking on the link in his email and then go to the trouble of finding a journal article and sending it to him. What kind of person would click on a link in a strange email ?! *Ahem*

Now if anyone who is more scam-savvy than me can tell me anything about this then I'm all ears. Is it a scam that I almost fell for, or just some stupid grad student?

P.S. Blair, can you see how this post has nothing at all to do with weddings? See I can talk about other things sometimes.

Free Dates

Bryan alerted me to this, an ad that appeared on the Monash student and staff forum.

Since you probably can't read the ad in this tiny image, it reads:

Free Dates!!!!
Yes, that's right, for a limited time u can get free dates with a not bad looking guy.I will pay for food, movie etc...however if u would like to make any monetary or non-monetary contributions or donations be welcomed.I am 1st yr student@clayton, and speak very well english. If you are interested pls email me at my email addy and i'll put u on the list. Ty.PS. No dates with guys.
This was posted by a guy called Emmanuel.

Usually people use the forum to sell furniture and stuff, but this is quite innovative. Certainly he's offering value for money. Last time I checked nobody had replied to the ad though. Maybe everyone is creeped out by the request for non-monetary contributions!!

UPDATE Two days later:
One enquiring mind asks for clarification - "wat abt pple who believe themselves to be a girl trapped in a guy's body?"

To which Emmanuel answers, "sorry no can do"

Emmanuel also adds, "This offer will only be available for a limited time so hurry before it ends"

A girl called Emily comments, "hahah u sound like such a cutie...send me a pic and me will try to set u up with one of my friends who is also fluent @ english and is definitely a woMAN!"

To which Emmanuel asks, "umm Emily Zou? What is your email or how do i contact you or maybe could you email me? Is that okay?"

So maybe Emmanuel got a date with one of Emily's friends, or maybe not. I think I'm going to ask for an update.

wedding ticker

Isn't this just darling?

See, it answers the question on everyone's lips before they even have the chance to ask.

I've noticed in the few times that I've been to online wedding forums, every bride-to-be on there has got some kind of ticker, to let everyone know when the wedding is, when the baby is due, how many pounds she needs to lose to fit the wedding dress, how much more money they need to save to pay for the wedding.... A ticker for all your needs. How I've got by without one all this time is beyond me.

Oh, the wedding accessories you can get out there! At least this one was for free. There's not much available that isn't marked up, like, 600% when it has the W-word attached to it.

Speaking of wedding accessories, don't you just love these?

Just perfect for those 'country elegance' themed connubials.

Duh!

Well now I'm embarrassed! I try not make a twit of myself too often on my blog, but today I must eat humble pie. Some may recommend that I be stripped of my doctorate too, but I hope it doesn't go that far.
Further to my whinging post a couple of days ago about the clock radio sleep button that could not be turned off, I have been consulting with my good friend, the electronically knowledgeable Kristina, who suggested pushing to snooze button to turn off the sleep function. At first, I was thinking that was a dumb idea and also that I had tried it 6 times anyway. But then I realised that I don't ever use the snooze button, and because it doesn't look like the other buttons on my clock radio, sometimes I forget its there - I thought that maybe I hadn't actually tried it. So last night I went to try it out, and I was shocked to discover that written on the snooze button in print so large that only I could have missed it all these years, was SNOOZE / SLEEP OFF. Yes, it worked. I wonder if I will remember this the next time I accidentally push the sleep button...

Don't push the sleep button

A few nights ago I had just set the alarm on my clock radio before bedtime, and was tucking myself into bed. I was really comfy, the lights were off and I could just feel myself starting to drift off to sleep. Then Bryan asked me if I had set the alarm. I had set the alarm, but the obsessive compulsive in me had to check that I'd set it to the right time, and remembered to actually turn the alarm on. There have been incidents in the past where I've set the alarm for PM rather than AM, which was a huge problem when my boss was due to pick me up for work at 5:50 AM one day. So, in the dark, I reached across to press what I thought was the alarm button to check the time it was set for. Only I didn't press the alarm button, I accidentally pressed the sleep button.

Music started playing! And it wouldn't stop! I was fully awake again and my cosy trip to dreamland had been delayed indefinitely. The music wouldn't turn off no matter what button I pressed. In the end I had to unplug the clock radio, which led to the discovery of a spider living behind my bedside table. When I had plugged the clock radio back in, I had to reset the clock and reset the alarm. I turned to Bryan (who was laughing!!!!) and assured him that the alarm had been set.

This is not the first time I've accidentally hit the sleep button on the clock radio and had to go through the torture of the music that won't stop. And it leads to the question, why is it called a sleep button, when it could more accurately be referred to as a torture button? Well I just found my answer on the ever-helpful Wikipedia. Apparently the sleep button is for people who like to fall asleep listening to the radio, and it turns off after an hour. I just wish there was a get-out clause where you could turn the radio off early, without having to unplug it and reset the time.

You may also have noticed my "Very important poll" on the sidebar. That was brought to us by Ning. I may or may not have submitted a photo of Molly to the poll. And so if you see this picture come up,

obviously she is the cutest, and you should vote for her.

A New Years Thankyou to everyone who forwards emails to me

I didn't write this. I was emailed this and similar forwards recently (sniff... sniff! Yes I can smell irony).

***

To all my friends who care, thank you!

Thank you!!!

I must send my thanks to whoever sent me the one about rat crap in the glue on envelopes cause I now have to get a wet towel with every envelope that needs sealing.

Also, now I have to scrub the top of every can of soda I open for the same reason.

I no longer have any savings because I gave it to a sick girl (Penny Brown) who is about to die in the hospital for the 1,387,258th time.

I no longer have any money at all, but that will change once I receive the $15,000 that Bill Gates/Microsoft and AOL are sending me for participating in their special e-mail program.

I no longer worry about my soul because I have 363,214 angels looking out for me and St. Theresa's novena has granted my every wish.

I no longer eat KFC because their chickens are actually horrible mutant freaks with no eyes or feathers.

I no longer use cancer-causing deodorants even though I smell like a water buffalo on a hot day.

Thanks to you, I have learned that my prayers only get answered if I forward an e-mail to seven of my friends and make a wish within five minutes.

Because of your concern I no longer drink Coca-Cola because it can remove toilet stains.

I no longer can buy gasoline without taking a man along to watch the car so a serial killer won't crawl in my back seat when I'm pumping gas.

I no longer drink Pepsi or Dr Pepper since the people who make these products are atheists who refuse to put "Under God" on their cans.

I no longer use Saran wrap in the microwave because it causes cancer.

And thanks for letting me know I can't boil a cup of water in the microwave anymore because it will blow up in my face...disfiguring me for life.

I no longer check the coin return on pay phones because I could be pricked with a needle infected with AIDS.

I no longer go to shopping malls because someone will drug me with a perfume sample and rob me.

I no longer receive packages from UPS or FedEx since they are actually AlQaeda in disguise.

I no longer shop at Target since they are French and don't support our American troops or the Salvation Army.

I no longer answer the phone because someone will ask me to dial a number for which I will get a phone bill with calls to Jamaica, Uganda,
Singapore, and Uzbekistan.

I no longer have any sneakers -- but that will change once I receive my free replacement pair from Nike.

I no longer buy expensive cookies from Neiman-Marcus since I now have their recipe.

Thanks to you, I can't use anyone's toilet but mine because a big brown African spider is lurking under the seat to cause me instant death when it bites my butt.

Thank you too for all the endless advice Andy Rooney has given us. I can live a better life now because he's told us how to fix everything.

And thanks for always correcting me with "gotchas" from "Snoops" who knows it all. Thanks to you, I am totally in the know.

And thanks to your great advice, I can't ever pick up $5.00 I dropped in the parking lot because it probably was placed there by a sex molester waiting underneath my car to grab my leg.

If you don't send this e-mail to at least 144,000 people in the next 70 minutes, a large dove with diarrhea will land on your head at 5:00 PM this afternoon and the fleas from 12 camels will infest your back, causing you to grow a hairy hump. I know this will occur because it actually happened to a friend of my next door neighbor's ex-mother-in-law's second
husband's cousin's beautician...

Have a wonderful day....
